China has launched the world’s second largest hydropower plant. President Xi Jinping’s government on Monday officially announced the launch of the first two manufacturing units. The centenary celebrations of the Communist Party of China will begin next week. Hydroelectricity is created by using the water pressure of a river that has falling or flowing currents. It is the most common of the renewable forces. Once it is possible to build a hydropower plant, it can be run with very little energy consumption.

And it emits far less greenhouse gases carbon dioxide than fossil fuels, such as oil, gas, coal, etc. Hydropower accounts for 20% of the world’s electricity and 6% of renewable energy.

 

Economic benefits

The biggest advantage of hydropower is that it is much cheaper than other types of electricity. Moreover, hydropower plants are much more sustainable than fuel-dependent electricity. There are still some hydropower plants that  built 50-100 years ago.

Since it  automated, labor costs are also lower. Moreover, its construction cost is also low. For example, it has  calculated that the cost of construction can be removed within 5-6 years by selling the electricity generated from the Three Georges Dam.

 

Capacity of hydropower plants,

Although there is no limit to how much power a hydropower plant can be called ‘big’, hydropower plants with a capacity of several hundred megawatts to more than 10 gigawatts are generally called ‘big’.

Currently there are only three plants that are capable of generating more than 10 gigawatts of electricity; These are: Tri Georges Dam (22.5 GW), Itapu Dam (14 GW), Guri Dam (10.2 GW). Large hydropower plants are usually the largest source of energy.

For example, there are hydropower plants that produce more than twice as much energy as the most powerful nuclear power plants in the world today.

 

Hydropower Station

Although most of the power  generated from large power plants, in some cases small power plants  also required. Power plants with a capacity of 10 MW or less  generally called small power plants.

However, in the North American project, the limit is up to 30 MW. A small power station can  connected to a power distribution grid, with only one isolated area or with only one house.

Smaller centers usually do not have to survey money, technology and environmental facilities, whereas large projects have to devote enough time and importance to this. So often these small projects can  completed very quickly.

These small power plants  built with flood control, irrigation and other projects. As a result, the cost of those projects reduced and their implementation  facilitated.

Small hydropower plants are quite popular in China. It is home to 50% of the world’s small hydropower plants.

The height of this dam made by China is about 200 meters. The administration has also said that it is possible to generate one million megawatts of hydropower from Baihetan Dam. It is the second largest dam after the Three Gorges Dam in 2003.

Ningnan County in southwest China’s Sichuan Province has been the subject of much controversy since its inception. Locals complained that the construction of the giant dam would cause severe damage to the river’s ecosystem. Besides, those who make a living by the river will also lose their jobs.

Despite criticism from environmentalists, Chinese leaders are building more dams to reduce dependence on coal and curb the growing demand for imported oil and gas.
