Six people, including a woman, were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Tangail highway in the Kurni area of Mirzapur upazila in Tangail on Friday morning. Another 10 people were injured.
One of the dead was identified as Chandu, 32. He is a resident of Shanerhat village in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur. He was the assistant driver of the truck involved in the accident. Five of the injured are undergoing treatment at Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur.
According to some eyewitnesses and police sources, the driver’s assistants were repairing the broken wheel of a Dhaka-bound Seba Classic Paribahan passenger bus leaving from Rangpur at that place. At this time many of the passengers got down from the bus and stood. At that time, a truck carrying cauliflower pushed the stopped bus from behind. The front of the bus broke the wall of a house on the side of the road and went inside. And when the front part of the truck hits the back of the bus, the back part of the bus and the front part of the truck get twisted. Four passengers of the bus, including a woman, were killed on the spot.
People rushed to the spot shouting at the injured people. Mirzapur Police Station, Mirzaipur’s Gorai Highway Police Station, Mirzapur Traffic Police and Mirzapur Fire Service personnel took part in the rescue operation. The injured were taken to Kumudini Hospital where two died. Widow Shanti Begum was lying on the bed with her grandson Nayan Mia (11) in the side room. He said he suddenly heard a loud noise in the room. Within moments, bricks and sand flew over their beds. The bed was away from the broken walls. Although they survived because of this, many valuable things including televisions and cupboards in their house have been destroyed.

The truck driver injured in the accident is undergoing treatment at the hospital. The bus driver could not be traced. Trying to find out the cause of the accident. The bodies of four of the dead are with the highway police and the bodies of two are at the Kumudini Hospital morgue.
