Manpower export is one of the sources of our foreign exchange earnings. In adverse global conditions, Bangladesh has faced a major setback in manpower exports. It is starting to hit our economy. Corona has hit all sectors of the economy. The immigration sector was not left out either. Despite the record amount of remittances coming to the country under the coronavirus infection situation, there has been a catastrophe in terms of creating foreign employment. There is not much light in the labor market in Corona. Where seven to one million workers get employment opportunities abroad every year, the lowest number of workers in 29 years has been able to go to different countries due to Corona. Not only the number of workers leaving, but also the number of workers returning from abroad is several times higher than other years. According to the published news, millions of workers are not able to go to work abroad due to corona coming to their country on holiday. Not only the expatriates returning to the country are in crisis, but also the lakhs of workers who had deposited money with various recruiting agencies to go abroad are now in the dark. However, in the first 15 days of this month, about five thousand workers have gone. Although the number is small compared to the Coronation period, it is being seen as an indication of the turnaround in the immigration sector.

In the reality of international labor market, Bangladeshi workers are relatively inefficient. In many professions, our staff has not been able to achieve the desired level of efficiency. So the employment of Bangladeshis in better and higher income professions is less. Moreover, we need to find new labor markets. We have to focus on exporting skilled manpower. In this case, there is no alternative to proper training. Expatriates have sent a record amount of remittances during the Corona period. New possibilities have been created in the agriculture and health sectors. However, in the absence of skilled workers, there are questions about how much Bangladesh can make use of this potential. For good reason, the theme of this year’s International Migrants Day was, ‘Mujib’s call, go abroad efficiently.’ Hopefully, the government is working on a plan to send an average of one thousand workers a year from each upazila, said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The value of educated and skilled people is increasing in the present world reality. Although not all workplaces are open to all, skilled manpower can create employment opportunities in their respective fields. So we have to build manpower to keep pace with the developing world.
